You have to be careful what you say about God. Not that God himself or herself is likely to be very bothered about what you say about him or her. Why should he be? If God is all powerful then he determines what you think and say, so ultimately he is responsible for everything anyway and he has only himself to blame for what you do. If he allows you some scope for free expression then again he has to respect your right to use it. Problem is not God objecting to what you say but other people presuming to object on his behalf. They seem to think they own God and go round killing and torturing in his name like he needed their protection from you. How did religions get this twisted? Perhaps we are influenced by tribal notions of a God of War whom we invoke to support us against other tribes we see as enemies. We seem to want to subjugate other tribes and compel them to worship our God who must be obeyed. He has mysterious ways of transmitting his orders through the inspirations of prophets and high priests. Sometimes he seems to require a bit of prompting. Different religions get different orders.
The sense of a belief in God seems very powerful and and motivates some people to commit extreme acts. Some of these acts are so appallingly cruel and irrational that those of us who are outside the influence of that religious cult may wonder how a deity could allow such stupid brutality to be committed in his name. We look for a explanation in terms of social pressures, environment, brainwashing. Those who carry out such extreme acts may be highly intelligent and their deeds require rational planning and organisation but they use their reasoning powers in the service of ideas and goals that are disconnected from fact and reason. They threaten to discredit the religion they claim to serve.
Yet many normal people go on believing in God. Many of them would freely admit that God is beyond human reason, that the divinity has aspects that are unknowable. There is a lot that is beyond our comprehension so we cannot challenge their belief and there is no reason why we should try to do so. What do they do when somebody commits an act of atrocity in the name of religion? They do what they can to help and then they go to pray. They pray not with the arrogance of the fanatic but with a deep humility and sorrow; they pray the quiet prayer from the soul.
